THE SURVIVING INDUSTRY

This piece of article was created as part of the secret portion of my personal diary and not expected to be published but as things have turned out to be, I will reveal as much stuff that I have bottled up deep inside me for several nights and may God help me.

I am one of the millions of music enthusiast in Nigeria that have always complained about the dilapidated state of the music industry. My vast knowledge of the wrongs of these sectors have so much over shadowed my sense of reasoning to the point that I hardly ever appreciate the good things which are so glaring to me. I am so much into the system to the point that rather than dish out appraisal once in a while, I rather remain cynic because I am constantly thinking of ways not to lose all the investment I have in the industry; I hope someone will understand my reasons.

It took me several journeys away from home to actually realise that the music industry in Nigeria is actually one of the only surviving and respected sector out side its shores. The sport sector has failed while power and technology have crumbled. The movie industry is also widely popular for some few successful actors/actresses surviving in an ocean of low budget and bad scripted movies.

All around Africa and beyond, the Nigerian artistes have made waves across several borders, satisfying the local airways and clubs with sing along songs despite the fact that all the music structures from performing musician association of Nigeria, to the copyright society are virtually not in existence.

Over fifty years without a successful musician association and over thirty years since all the major record labels from EMI, Decca west Africa, Phillips and Sony record stated disinvestment and left the country, the music industry is still surviving. Today like never before, you get to watch countless number of music videos directed in Nigeria and one will want to think it was directed outside the country.

On record as of today, Nigerian musicians are receiving nominations for Grammy and BET Awards, not forgetting that we are the highest receivers For MTV and Channel O music Awards. Nigerian artistes are also reaping the rewards of good music by earning huge performance fees and endorsement from major Nigerian companies…..with all of these, I have come to the conclusion that the Nigerian music industry is and will continue to survive despite all odds.
